What Is Spinal Manipulation?
The difference between spinal manipulation and the chiropractic adjustment is far more than semantics! While some use these terms interchangeably, the difference is profound. Consider the distinctions between a horse and zebra. They have much in common. But they also have differences. Some obvious. Some not so obvious.
Spinal Manipulation Therapy or SMT
Spinal manipulations are a form of manual medicine, which is primarily interested in the way the spine moves.
Generally speaking, spinal manipulations are delivered by osteopaths, physical therapists and, sometimes purposefully (or accidently), by massage therapists. These are general, long lever mobilizations of spinal joints that are intended to improve the range of the motion of a particular joint and help improve biomechanics of the spine.
