What Do Chiropractors Do?

What Do Chiropractors Do?

To better understand what chiropractors do, it might be helpful to list some of the things chiropractors don’t do.

  • Chiropractors do not treat diseases or conditions.
  • Chiropractors do not treat aches or pains.
  • Chiropractors do not “crack your back.”
  • Chiropractors do not claim to cure anything.
  • Chiropractors do not insist on lifetime care.

These assertions fly in the face of lingering bias, myth and misconception. Here’s the truth about what chiropractors really do.

Reduce Interference to Your Nervous System

Rather than treat diseases and conditions, which is the practice of medicine, what chiropractors do is revive your ability to self-heal. Chiropractors do this by reducing interferences to your nervous system (usually along your spine) and invoking your inborn ability to heal yourself.

To do this, chiropractors assess your spinal column and locate areas in which misaligned vertebrae may be affecting the spinal cord and nerve roots as they emerge from between each spinal joint.

Precise, Specific Chiropractic Adjustments

What chiropractors do next (after explaining everything) is to apply a gentle pressure at the right time, place and angle to help nudge the wayward spinal bone into a more proper position. These chiropractic adjustments are precise, specific and feel great.

Some patients respond in several weeks or months. Others with long-standing spinal problems can take longer. Still others discover that some type of ongoing care schedule can help preserve their progress and help avert a relapse. How long you choose to benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you.

In addition to chiropractic care, many chiropractors offer other complementary services. Read on…
